8 weeks before
- Get three quotes from movers
- Book the moving date
- Let go of what is not coming with you
- Tell school and work
4 weeks before
- Schedule electric, gas, water, and internet
- Change your address with mail, bank, and insurance
- Get boxes, tape, and markers
- Check contents insurance for the new home
2 weeks before
- Pack the rooms you do not use every day
- Label every box with the room and what is inside
- Plan where pets will be on moving day
- Measure doorways for large furniture
The week before
- Pack a box for the first 48 hours
- Photograph furniture before you take it apart
- Confirm the arrival time with the movers
- Take out cash for tips
Moving day
- Read the meters in the old home
- Last walk-through: closets, balcony, storage
- Hand over the keys only after the place is empty
- The essentials box stays with you, not on the truck
The day after
- Read the meters in the new home
- Change the locks if you need to
- Plug in the fridge and the washing machine
- Check the boxes against your labels
